    Week 3

Date: Thursday, April 20, 2006 10:30-11am

Outline

Overall Status

Group Morale: gotta catch up!

This Week's Goals: Since none of us have much experience with game design, our major goal was to learn the software & tools we'd be using for this project and to have basic examples up and running.

Goals Accomplished: We decided to build our own D3D graphics engine instead of using the OGRE SDK. This set us behind schedule so we decided to allocate more of our resources to getting this task completed. Since the network and interface were progressing smoothly, we brought Jim and Masa over to the graphics side to help build the engine and had Mei help with the modeling.

Next Week's Goals: Get graphics engine up and working

Individual Questions

1) What were your concrete goals for the week?

2) What goals were you able to accomplish?

3) If there were goals you were unable to meet, what were the reasons?

4) What are your specific goals for the next week?

5) What is your individual morale (which might be different from the overall group morale)?

Graphics

Elizabeth's Status Report

1) My concrete goals for this week were to finish the concept art for the bombs, items, and item boxes as well as to finish one set of bombs (either mammoth, individual, or speciality)

2) I managed to finish all the concept art I need (as well as story concepts for the game) and I got started on modelling the bombs.

3) I didn't manage to finish a whole set of bombs though. Reacquainting myself with Maya took longer than I expected and responsibilities for other courses took a larger chunk of my time than I had originally planned on. Now, I have a better idea about how much time I need to budget for everything so I shouldn't run into that problem again.

4) I'm hoping that I can finish the speciality and the individual bombs by next week. If I have time, I'd like to finish the mammoth bombs, too, and start working out terrains with Kristen. Also, I want to learn how to write graphics code using Direct X (I only know OpenGL) and help get the game engine up and running.

5) My overall morale is best described as "stressed out" because I didn't manage to get done everything I wanted to have done by now. However, I'm pretty sure I can catch up, especially thanks to Mei taking over the item box modelling for me.

Kristen:

1) My goal was to create the Panda model and have it skinned and fully animated.

2) I was able to create the mesh for the Panda and add the skeleton, but I wasn't able to finish the animations yet.

3) The reason I wasn't able to complete my goal was mostly because I was out-of-town for 4 days. It was also my first time using 3ds Max.

4) My goal for next week is to finish the Panda and get an environment (bamboo forest) set up for use.

5) same as group moral

Network

Jim's Status Report:

1) My goals for the past 3 weeks was to research the network component of our game and design a primitive module for the server and client.

2) I was able to make a primitie module for the server and client with Mei. A client can connect to the server and receive static information from the server, and vice versa. Packets can be sent between them. The actual structure of these packets need to more specific, but I need to find out the exact data that will be transferred between server and client. This aspect will be postpone till the game engine is more developed.

3) Suprisingly the network portion was not too bad. For the most part, the network is setup. It just needs some more refinement when we figure out the actual data that we'll be transferring. Unfortunately, I think I need to contribute more to other portions of the game.

4) I'll be working on the game engine next week, so the network will be post- poned till there's more development. My specific goal to figure out how to use DirectX and implement a basic framework for the game engine. I want our character models to be moving in a plain terrain with user input.

5) I think we're a little behind, so we need to pick up some more speed.

Hong Mei Qiu

1. my concrete goal for the past week:
To finish up the network with Jim.
Learning about RakNet.

2. my goals accomplished:
Built the client part of the network, combined with Jim.
Learned more about RakNet.

3. I wish I could have more time working on the project and read about the DirectX.

4. The goal for next week, I am going to learn 3d max, and finish up with modeling the weapon containers by next Monday, and start to work more on modeling. (hope by next week I can have a “bamboo forest” done)

5. This is going to be original and great!

Audio

Nghiem Le

1) Goals for the week
- Learn DirectSound Tools.
- Understand how to use dxutil & dsutil.
- Find simple sounds and play with it using the sample code.

2) Accomplished goal:
- I’m a bit more familiar with DirectSound
- Write the generic Audio object as a wrapper so the game engine can call these objects as sound player for each individual character.

3) Unaccomplished goal:
- Find background sound. I try to download off from the internet but I prefer original piece that fit the feeling of the game more.
- Manipulate CSoundManager. I original thought of writing something like CSoundManager and I end up having these classes written already.

4) Next week goal:
- Email Music Department for composers who would want to participate composing original background sound for this game.
- Find more sounds that related to each individual character
- Play action sound simultaneously with background music
- Help other teammates to build basic menu using Photoshop

5) Individual morale
- I’m trying to be more productive. Too many things to learn, so little time. I need to get used to the idea of learning the new material while building some application using those tools.

Interface

Masa

1) What were your concrete goals for the week?

To have a basic skeleton for a game running - basically, a flat terrain
populated by static objects.

2) What goals were you able to accomplish?

None.

3) If there were goals you were unable to meet, what were the reasons?

It took us a long time to figure out what exactly goes into the making of a 3D game. I think each of us were trying to figure things out on our own instead of trying to discuss it with eachother. We're just now starting on implementing a graphics engine so we're pretty behind on things.

4) What are your specific goals for the next week?

To complete our goals for the current week and then some.

5) What is your individual morale (which might be different from the
overall group morale)?

My morale is a little low. I've been researching and experimenting with DirectX but have made very little progress so far. I've run into a few roadblocks with code that compiles and executes but doesn't seem to do what I want it to. However, I'm still hopeful that we'll be able to catch
up in the coming weeks.
